Ned Munroe
The artist’s approach to his art is precise, methodical, and inventive. Orchestrating a mesmerizing arsenal of mediums and techniques, he creates a visual map which explores the human interconnection to art. The figure tends to be a reoccurring theme with the inclusion of an emotional or spiritual component connected to it. His work offers no narratives of pretense but rather evokes a sense of humanity in its most elemental of expressions. A simple touch, embrace or gaze becomes satisfyingly complex and alluring. With a background in fashion, it is not surprising that pattern would prove to be pivotal in his compositions. Part of his process is both a mental and physical layering of emotion, color, line, pattern and texture. The artist skillfully uses the viewer’s eye as a passage through which to channel the emotional information, so that his works become less about the subjects, and more a question as to the emotional makeup of the image, and how the viewer gives them meaning. In the end, his work shows a nuanced understanding of contemporary visual culture, and a passionate intensity with which the artist pursues his personal vision. Today the artist lives, and maintains a studio in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
